Deride is a verb which means to ridicule or express contempt for something you consider to be stupid or of no value.

Origin

It comes from the 16th Century French word ‘derider which in turn comes from Latin ‘deridere’ meaning “to ridicule, laugh to scorn.” (de + ridere = “down” + “to laugh”)

Usage

The leader derided the project for being outdated.

The scientists deride the Flat Earth campaigners.
