How Leicester City’s five-year fairytale unfolded

The Premier League is the most watched sports league in the world with a potential TV audience in the billions. While it caters to the cliche that anyone can beat anyone in a particular match, it doesn’t often happen through an entire season. That’s the reason why Leicester City’s title-winning feat in 2015-16 is seen as a fairytale run as they started out as underdogs against some of the biggest clubs, worldwide.

The fact that they were staring at relegation to a lower division with less than 10 games to go in the previous season puts in context Leicesters achievement. Italian journeyman Claudio Ranieri was appointed as the club’s manager and he steered the club to safety.

That was, perhaps, the beginning of something sensational as they moved from strength to strength in the next season. In the 38 matches that were played by Leicester in the 2015-16 season, they lost just three of them, winning 23 matches and drawing the remaining 12.

As a result, Leicester finished top of the table with 81 points, 10-points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the end of the season. For the first time in the club’s history, Leicester City finished champions of England’s highest league.

Did you know?

Before the season started, Leicester City was 5000-1 odds with the gambling bookmakers to win the title. They were given such poor odds because no one expect them to win the Premier League and the Leicester City faithfuls who did go ahead and put some money on it made a lot in return.

Leicester City’s title win enabled them to play in the Champions league the next season, a first for the club.

Striker Jamie Vardy scored a goal in 11 consecutive Premier League games during this season, a record for the longest such streak.

Winger Riyad Mahrez became the first African and first Algerian player to win the PFA Player of the Year award in this season.
