What is the ability to use the senses?

Senses are the powers you use to learn what is happening around you or inside you.

Some senses tell you about things outside your body. By hearing, seeing, touching, smelling and tasting, you learn about the world.

Other senses tell you about changes that take place inside your body. They tell you when you are hungry, thirsty, tired, or hurting.

Whether they work inside or outside your body, senses can work alone or together to guide you and guard you.

Each sense is special

Think about the last time you were at the zoo. What did you see? Did you see a zebra? What did you smell? Were there any bad smells? What did you touch? Did you pet a goat? What did you hear? Did you hear the seals barking? Did you taste anything? Did you eat some peanuts or ice cream?

When you see, hear, touch, taste, and smell, you are using the five senses. You have other senses, too. Some of them are balance, hunger, pain, and thirst. They tell you when your body is standing, sitting or hanging upside down. They also tell you when your body is moving and what it needs.

You have two groups of senses. One group tells you about things outside your body. It includes hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch. It also tells you about heat, which is felt by special cells in your skin. The senses give you information about what is going on between your body and the outside world. When you touch something hot, they tell you to pull away.

The other group of senses tells you about the inside of your body. This group lets you know when you are hungry, thirsty, or tired – or when something hurts.
