How your heart works?

Put your hand on your chest. Do you feel something beating? That’s your heart.

Your heart is an organ about the size of your fist. It acts like a pump. Its job is to pump blood to all the different parts of your body.

Your heart lies in the centre of your chest. It has two sides. The left side pumps fresh blood all through your body. The blood travels through tubes called arteries. This blood brings a gas called oxygen to your cells. Cells need oxygen to work. At the same time, this blood picks up wastes that you are cells must get rid of. The blood comes back to your heart by way of different tubes, called veins.

When the blood returns to your heart, it comes into the right side. Then it is pumped into your lungs.

You have two lungs in your chest. They are the organs that help you breathe. In the lungs, the blood gets rid of wastes and picks up more oxygen. Now it is fresh again. The blood is pumped back to the left side of your heart, ready to restart its journey. Blood leaving your heart right now will travel to your toes and back again in about one minute.

Want to know how fast your heart beats? Take your pulse. You can feel how fast your blood is being pushed through the arteries in your wrist. Place your first two fingers on the thumb side of the inside of your wrist. Can you feel your pulse? Count it for 60 seconds (one minute). The number you come up with is your pulse rate. Do 25 froghops. Take your pulse again. Did it change? Take your pulse again after resting for a few minutes. How has it changed now?
