What makes Tehran a great city in the Middle East?


            Some countries have ancient stories to tell; some cities tell stories that complement the ancient histories of these countries. Tehran, the capital of Iran, has monuments that sing the lore of the glorious past of the great nation that Iran once was.



            Tehran is the most populous city in Iran, located at the foot of the Elburz mountain range in the north central Iran. The city has the second largest metropolitan area in the Middle East. Agha Mohammad Khan of the Qajar Dynasty established the city as the capital of Iran in 1796. Since then, Tehran has grown from a small city to a major metropolis with around 15 million inhabitants in the larger metropolis.



            The capital has been shifted several times throughout history and Tehran figures as the 32nd national capital of Iran.



            Tehran has a unique topography. Its closeness to the highest peak in the country makes it Iran’s gateway to the outside world. The city has functioned as Iran’s administrative centre, economic powerhouse, and its largest job market. The Azadi Tower, a memorial built under the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1971 to mark the 2,500th year of the foundation of the Imperial State of Iran, is probably the most famous landmark of the city. The Milad Tower, the world’s sixth-tallest self-supporting tower that was completed in 2007, and the Tabiat Bridge, a newly built landmark, are some of the tourist attractions of the city.

Why is Manama an important city?


          Manama is the capital of the State of Bahrain. Archaeologists say that Manama, an ancient city, had human settlements on its coastline during the Bronze Age. The city was a commercial and pearling centre for hundreds of years. It developed into an important trans-shipment point for business between India and the Persian Gulf by 1782. Manama became a cosmopolitan hub of Iranian, Indian and Gulf Arab communities by the latter half of the twentieth century.



           Manama is the largest city of Bahrain. The largest port of the country, Mina Sulman, is in Manama. The city has many oil refineries and light industries in it. The National Museum and a Quran museum are the main attractions in the city.



           Manama is a strikingly modern city today. About one-fifth of the population of the entire country lives here. Manama is one of the most favoured destinations for visitors from neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

Why is Singapore a special place?


            Do you know the name of a country that has a capital with the country’s name? Singapore is such a country. Singapore is the world’s only island state. There are a total of sixty three islands that make up the Republic of Singapore.



            Singapore was once a colony of Britain. The British East India Company made the place a trading post and settlement. Singapore, today, is the most densely Populated independent country in the world. It boasts of a government machinery largely without corruption. The state also has a skilled workforce and an investment-friendly atmosphere. The government also exports goods manufactured within the state.



            One of the chief advantages of Singapore is that it has one of the world’s biggest ports. The city is also a global commercial, financial and transportation hub.

What makes Seoul a futuristic city?



            Seoul is the capital of South Korea. Located in the centre of the Korean peninsula, the city is also the largest Metropolis of the country.



            Seoul has played important roles in the politics of the region for centuries, as the city is located in a strategically significant area. Therefore, from one kingdom to the next, the city has been a matter of hot contest in terms of defence and economy.



            In spite of its long history of conquests and wars, Seoul is an excellent example of a futuristic city today. The city is technologically very advanced. Artists and architects have made the city beautiful by crafting glass, concrete and steel into natural forms. It has also transformed its image from an industrial city to an appealing metropolis with its exquisite parks and the stunning architectural designs of its buildings.



            At the same time, Seoul has maintained its culture and tradition by maintaining its temples, palaces, cutting edge design and mountain trails. The heritage sites of the city include the Jongmyo shrine, the alleys between the graceful traditional wooden homes, and the magnificent city walls.

What is the significance of the city of Phnom Penh?


            Foreign occupation and colonization have changed the fabric of many cities across the globe. Colonization made vital interventions in the socio-cultural context of these cities and introduced newer western lifestyles. Phnom Penh was one such city which was heavily influenced by the French culture.



            Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. The city is located at the confluence of three great rivers. The French had made Phnom Penh their capital in Cambodia because of its strategic importance. The city was the epicentre of socioeconomic development during the period of French colonization.



            The city charms tourists with its French colonial mansions, tree-lined boulevards and monumental Angkorian architecture. The Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Wat Phnom Buddhist temple are some of the most visited places in the city. Phnom Penh is also known for its bustling markets selling carvings, paintings, silk, silver, gems and antiques.

Why is Abu Dhabi an important city?


              Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf, and is the country’s centre of political and economic activities as well as a commercial and cultural hub. Abu Dhabi possesses 90 percent of the UAE’s approximately 100 billion barrels of oil reserves and 60 percent of its significant gas reserves. Because of the prestige of its ruling family, and especially the magnitude of its oil and gas revenues, Abu Dhabi dominates the UAE politically and economically. Amazingly, modern international airports, universities, hospitals, museums, towering hotels and office buildings, and a modern communications and transportation infrastructure are now a part of the landscape where only fifty years earlier there were only simple palm-frond huts and dusty paths.

What makes Jakarta a charming city?


          Every city has a story to tell. Jakarta’s history is full of conquests and colonization. From the 16th century onwards, various powers such as the Portuguese and the Dutch took control over the city and colonized it.



          The Republic of Indonesia is a country composed of more than 17,000 islands and Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. The cit probably came into existence in the 14th century with the development of a small port of the Hindu Pajajaran kingdom at the mouth of the Ciliwung River. The Portuguese, the first Europeans to arrive in the city, came in search of the ‘spice islands’ of Indonesia. They established a fortress in Jakarta in the early I6th century. The Dutch followed the Portuguese. Indonesia was under the colonial rule of the Dutch for nearly 350 years.



          The Japanese invaded the country in 1942. They ruled Indonesia for about three years. The country declared independence on August 17th, l945, and Jakarta became the capital of Indonesia. The nation’s economy culture and politics revolve around Jakarta today. Some of the major landmarks in the city are the National stock exchange of Indonesia, the Bank of Indonesia and the National Monument.

Why is Bangkok a famous city?


          Some cities have an incredible capacity to attract people to it. In the case of Bangkok, it would be hard to pinpoint a single factor that entices visitors into it, as a host of features make it a magical city. Millions of tourists flock to Bangkok every year and the city is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the  planet.



          Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, and has been the capital from 1767 onwards. Since the eighteenth century, Bangkok has been a dominant city in Thailand. It is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, one of the most important rivers in Southeast Asia. The city under - went a transformation during the 1980s and 1990s when rapid modernization gripped Bangkok resulting in an economic and cultural expansion.



          Bangkok is Thailand’s major port; and therefore, plays a significant role of being a strategically vital place. The Chao Phraya River connects Bangkok to the rest of the world through the Gulf of Thailand.



          The city is known for its colourful street life and breathtaking cultural landmarks. Its ancient palaces and Buddhist temples make it the centre of Thailand’s culture and history. The largest gold idol of Buddha is found in Bangkok. The five-metre tall statue, weighing 5.5 tonnes, is located in the temple of Golden Buddha, Wet traimit.



          Bangkok keeps attracting more and more people every year with its charm and magic.




What makes Islamabad a special city?


               Choosing a city to be the capital of a Country needs serious thought and extreme care. Some nations have switched their capital cities over the years for various political and strategic reasons. Islamabad was not Pakistan’s first choice for the capital. When Pakistan got independence from the British in 1947, Karachi was the first choice for the capital. However, in 1960, General Ayub Khan, the then president of Pakistan, built Islamabad as the new capital.



               Islamabad and Rawalpindi are twin cities in Pakistan. Islamabad is located near the Margalla Hills. Some of the special features of the city are its parks and terraces. The Shah Faisal Mosque, a magnificent edifice and great artistic accomplishment, is situated at the foot of the Margalla Hills. The mosque resembles an eight-faceted desert tent supported by four giant concrete girders and is surrounded by four towering minarets. The Pakistan Monument is another landmark of the city. Pakistan House, the home of the President, the National Assembly building, the National University, and the botanical garden are some of the other points of interest in the city. The famed ancient university of Taxila was situated near the city.

Why does Sri Lanka have two capitals?

            Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the legislative capital of one of our neighbours, Sri Lanka. It was inaugurated as the new administrative capital in 1982.



            Sri Lanka got independence in 1948. As years passed, government offices had outgrown the country’s capital of Colombo, and the government decided to relocate offices outside the city. In 1982, the new parliament building was inaugurated in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. The following year other government offices began moving to the city.



            Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is now a planned city with government offices, universities and residential buildings.



            Colombo is the commercial capital, and is the largest city in Sri Lanka. Colombo has been a strategically significant city for thousands of years. The city has a large, deep natural harbour along the East-West trade routes. This geographical feature of the city enabled it to grow as a seaport for business and trade between Asia and the rest of the world.

What is the significance of the city of Kathmandu?


            Cities are built not merely of brick and mortar; they are monuments of Man’s struggle against time and degeneration. Some of the oldest cities in the world have witnessed Man’s journey through civilizations. Kathmandu, a 2000 years old city, is one such sublime place.



            Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. It is located in the great Himalayan mountain range. A specialty of the city is its hidden temples. One of the most famous Hindu temples in the world is located in the city: the Pashupathinath Temple. The deity of the temple is Lord Pashupathi. Pashupathinath, in fact, is another name of Lord Shiva. After the devastating earthquake in 2015, the only structure that was left without much damage was the Pashupathinath temple.



            The temple stood tall and erect, with barely any cracks in its wall, when all nearby structures and monuments were turning into rubble and dust.



            The city abounds in large expanses of marigold gardens, golden pagodas and tiny workshops. Kathmandu exports red chillies and a walk through the outskirts of the city would present us with the spectacle of long stretches of drying red chillies in courtyards. The city hosts the headquarters of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, or SAARC.



            More than half of Nepal’s population is found in Kathmandu. The cultural scenario of the city is so diverse, that the city is sometimes referred to as a living museum of the world’s cultures.

Why Beijing is considered an important city?


              Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China. The city is one of the most splendid cities in the world. It is the hub of culture, politics and education in China. Beijing has a magnificent history to tell, as the city has over three thousand years of glorious antiquity.



             Beijing is one of the most populous cities in the world. Located at the northern tip of the North China Plain, the city is bordered by mountains to the north, northwest and west. There is desert beyond this region and the mountain ranges protect the city and the agricultural regions of Northern China from encroaching by the desert.



            Beijing boasts of a rich cultural heritage. There are seven UNESCO Heritage Sites in the city; and therefore, the city is a popular tourist spot. The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian cave system, the Great Wall and the Grand Canal constitute the heritage sites. The city also has vast palaces, magnificent tombs, fabulous temples, exquisite parks and world-renowned art treasures, which have made it the pride of the world!

Dhaka has a distinguished history of being the Mughal capital of Bengal. It remained the capital city for 75 years. The British East India Company took control over the city later. Dhaka became the administrative capital of East Pakistan, when British India was partitioned into India and Pakistan in 1947. When Bangladesh was formed, the city was the obvious choice for the nation’s capital. As the capital city, Dhaka grew into a metropolis of about 8.5 million people. Dhaka remains the heart of Bangladesh’s industrial, commercial, cultural, educational and political activities today.

The city presents a curious blending of the ancient and the modern. There are innumerable historically significant monuments in the city. The tombs of its bygone rulers are a major tourist attraction. The city is known for its gardens, the most famous of which is, Babur’s Garden.

              The people of Japan have always captured the attention of the world for their industrious nature and never-say-die attitude.
