I want to join a marine engineering course

I am in II PU. I want to join a marine engineering course. Which college should I join and what is the application procedure?

Bachelor's in Marine Engineering is offered by many institutes all over India. In most, admission is through an entrance examination followed by medical examination. Admission to Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) at Kolkata and Mumbai (www.merical.ac.in) is on the basis of IIT-Joint Entrance Examination. Other institutes are: Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education and Training (MANET), Pune (www.manetpune.com), Tolani Maritime Institute, Talegaon, Pune (www.tolani.edu/tmi); R.L. Institute of Nautical Sciences, Madurai (www.rlinstitutes.com); Mumbai Maritime Training Institute, Mumbai (http://maritimetraininginstitute.com). These institutions use independent admission procedures; visit their websites for details.

He wants to do a Master's in Marine Engineering

My brother is pursuing B.E. (Mech.) third year now. He wants to do a Master's in Marine Engineering. Is it a good idea? If so, which college would be best for this? What is the procedure to join this course?

A Marine Engineer is responsible for maintaining and operating the machinery and electrical and electronic equipment on board ships. Although a career at sea appears glamorous and attractive, it entails being away from one's family for long stretches of time. In spite of all this, life at sea pays very well and is full of varied experiences, thrills and challenges.

The following institutes offer M.Tech. in Marine Engineering: National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Srinivasnagar PO, Surathkal, Mangalore (nitk.ac.in), Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering (KMSME) CUSAT, Cochi; Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, (Deemed University), Girinagar, Pune; Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), Chennai. Admission for Mechanical Engineering graduates is usually based on the GATE score. Eligibility is B.E. in Marine/Mechanical Engineering.

Candidates seeking admission to these courses should be medically fit. Glasses are permitted but the power in each eye should not exceed +/-2.5. You must also not suffer from colour blindness.

I want to know about marine engineering and the merchant navy

I am an aspiring engineer and will be giving all the standard engineering entrance exams this year. I want to know about marine engineering and the merchant navy, the best colleges in India (including IITs) offering courses for this and the scope for girls in this field.

T. S. Chanakya, Navi Mumbai offers B.Sc. in Nautical Science while Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata offers a marine engineering course. Admission is open to unmarried Indian citizens (both male and female), who have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Selection is through a Joint Entrance Examination conducted by IITs, i.e. IITJEE. After qualifying in the written examination, candidates are called for an interview and medical test.

To join T.S. Chanakya, normal vision of 6/6 in each eye, separately, is essential and glasses are not allowed. For MERI, glasses may be worn but eyesight in each eye beyond 2.5 is not allowed.

Marine Engineering courses are offered by many other institutes all over India. These include Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune; Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education & Training, Pune; Academy of Maritime Education & Training, Chennai; International Maritime Institute, Greater Noida; R. L. Institute of Nautical Science, Madurai and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur for Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture.

Engineers find employment with the Merchant Navy, the Indian Navy, dockyards as well as companies engaged in shipbuilding. They can also take up employment with firms offering design and research activities, Indian and foreign shipping companies, and also with the harbour and port departments.

Marine masters

I have a keen interest in marine engineering. Please mention some reputed government institutes with their complete addresses and their websites, other than IIT, in the field of marine engineering. Do these institutes grant admission on the basis of marks obtained in class XII?

MERI – Kolkata offers a four-year full-time course in marine engineering. The basic eligibility is a pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Admission is on the basis of the candidate’s performance in IIT-JEE. Tolani College of Marine Engineering, Pune, also offers a four-year course. Indian Naval Dockyard, Bombay Port Trust Ltd, Patel Engineering, Mumbai, Chidambaram Ship Care, Chennai, and Garden Reach Ship Building, Kolkata, offer different courses on the subject. Graduates in mechanical, electrical, electronic engineering and naval architecture are also in demand in this field.

Marine Engineering after 10+2

I am in standard XII, studying commerce and maths. I have a keen interest in marine engineering. I would like to know whether I could join this branch straight after the 10+2 level? Please mention some reputed institutes in the fields of marine engineering.

You should have opted for the science stream after class X to study marine engineering. Marine engineering is about building and designing technically sound ships. Training for marine engineering is imparted at the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), which has its head office in Kolkata and branch in Mumbai. MERI offers a four-year course in marine engineering for which the eligibility is a 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Admission on the basis of performance in the all India Joint Institute of Technology (IIT-JEE). Mechanical engineering graduates can do a six-month course from MERI- Mumbai, provided their degree is recognised by the AICTE. If you are still keen to go to sea, use your commerce background and join the shipping industry where you can join job duties like port administration and cargo handling. Narottam Morarji Institute of Shipping, Nariman Point, Mumbai, runs post-graduate diploma courses in shipping management and in associateship. The two different courses tackle the various commercial and management aspects of shipping.
