What next for those excluded from the final NRC?

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), those who did not make it to the NRC will not be immediately declared foreigners and put it detention centres. It has clarified that any decision would be taken only after the excluded applicants have exhausted all legal options, like the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs), the High Court and the Supreme Court.

Thus, those people who have been excluded from NRC will be given a chance to present their case before the Foreigners Tribunals within 120 days, from August 21, 2019. If they lose the case in the tribunal, they can move the High Court and then the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the MHA has sanctioned the setting up of 1,000 FTs in the state. About 100 are already in place. It is to be noted that there are six detention enters in Assam and at least 10 more are all set to come up in future.
