How did the residents have to prove their citizenship according to NRC?

Residents of Assam produced legacy data to prove their claim of citizenship for inclusion in the updated NRC. The documents include the 1951 NRC and pre-1971 electoral rolls. The descendants and applicants born after 1971 had to submit documents pertaining to an ancestor. Additionally, documents establishing the relationship the relationship with the ancestor such as birth certificate or land documents were to be attached.

The Assam Accord set March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date to identify illegal foreigners because it was on March 25, 1971 that the Bangladesh Liberation War broke out. The war sent lakhs of immigrants from East Pakistan (Bangladesh) into Assam and West Bengal.
