What is a budget airline?

Also known as a low-cost carrier, a budget airline provides flyers with a cheap and efficient service without the frills. The price of a ticket may sometimes be 50 per cent less than charged by a traditional airline. The budget airline is able to cut costs by not including meals in the ticket price, by having only economy class (no first and business class) and ‘first-come-first seating’ (as in a bus). The food and drink can be bought by passengers on the flight.

Another method used by a budget airline to reduce cost is to fly only between cities within a country. It may also operate only short-haul flights (less than 4-6 hours either way). Such airlines also use secondary airports or primary airports during non-peak hours. Some countries such as Malaysia and Singapore have gone so far as to provide low-cost carriers with their own terminals.

In recent times, budget airlines have become very popular, especially with frequent business travellers, backpackers and students.
