What is meteor shower?

Some of you may have caught the Geminid meteor shower that peaked on the intervening night of December 14-15. The Geminids are among the most spectacular celestial shows. But if you had missed it, you do not have to lose heart. Not only will the bright Geminids be visible for the next few days, there is one more meteor shower you could witness before this year-end.

The Ursid meteor shower is active each year December 17 and 26, with a peak around December 21-22. Though low-key with about five to 10 meteors per hour during the pre-dawn hours, the shower produces occasional outbursts when the rate exceeds 100 meteors per hour.
