Electric toothbrushes have been around for a long time. The first one was invented by a Swiss doctor in 1954. It was designed for those who had poorly-developed motor skills and for those who were braces.
An electric toothbrush has an oscillating head that cleans teeth using 4500 to 7000 strokes a minute compared to the 300 strokes achieved by manual brushing.
A sonic toothbrush is in a class of its own, however. It uses ultrasonic waves to clean teeth using an eye-popping 30,000 strokes a minutes!
All toothbrushes have bristle to scrub the teeth but generally the bristles cannot reach every nook and cranny. The waves from a sonic toothbrush whip up the saliva, water and toothpaste to an oxygen-rich foam that penetrated between teeth and below the gum line. It dislodges plaque which is a breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria.
Clinical studies have shown that sonic toothbrushes are far superior to traditional toothbrushes even though they cost upwards of $100 or around Rs. 6000 each.
