What are unusual treehouses?

These are treehouses with a difference – they are round! The treehouses are suspended in the canopy of the rainforest on Vancouver Island, Canada. Called Free Spirit Spheres (FSS), the unique treehouses were conceptualized and built by Tom Chudleigh, using architecture based on the principle of ‘biomimicry’.

There are currently three spheres called Eve, Eryn and Melody (two more are in the making) ranging from 2.8 to 3.2 m in diameter. Each sphere is tethered by three ropes to three separate trees, about 3.1 to 4.6 m above the ground. It can be accessed via a spiral staircase or a walkaway connected to a bridge. Each has from 2 to 5 porthole-like windows. The spheres are lightweight, so they sway or rock when when there is a wind or when guests move inside.

Two are made from wood (yellow cedar and Sitka spruce) and one, the largest, is of fiberglass. All have wooden interiors. A bed, a cupboard, a table and shelves are built into the wall of the sphere. A composing toilet is located 50 m from the base of each tree and there is a common bathhouse a little further away. In the biggest sphere, Eryn, there is a double bed and a loft bed. Each sphere also has a tiny kitchen with facilities to make tea and coffee. The largest one has a tiny fridge. Electric heaters are provided in winter.
