How did Benz become Mercedes-Benz?

In 1886, Karl Benz, a German automobile engineer, made the world’s first petrol-powered motor car. Around the same time, Gottlieb Daimler, another automobile enthusiast, manufactured another car with the help of engineer Wilhelm Maybach.

Though Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) had good vehicles, sales were not favourable. Luck visited Daimler in the form of Emil Jellinek, another car enthusiast from Austria. He wanted Daimler to make new cars utilizing existing technology. Daimler renamed the company as Mercedes to honour Jellinek whose daughter’s name was Mercedes.

Both Benz and Mercedes competed against each other to produce better cars. Because of the economic crisis, Mercedes and Benz merged in the year 1926 to form Mercedes-Benz which is how the company is known today.
