Sir Butterfly! New Species Named for David Attenborough

The black-eyed satyr (Euptychia attenboroughi), a rare butterfly found only in the tropical forest in the upper Amazon basin of Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, was recently named after Sir David Attenborough, the host of many popular nature-themed TV series, including the BBC’s Life and Planet Earth. Other creatures named after this famous naturalist include a species of ghost shrimp in Madagascar (Ctenocheloides attenboroughi), an extinct species of armoured fish (Materpiscis attenboroughi), a pygmy locust (Electrotetix attenboroughi), an Ecuadorian tree (Blakea attenboroughii) and a pitcher plant in the Philippines (Nepenthes attenboroughii).
