What was the role of the poet Sarojini Naidu in the freedom struggle?

Known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, Sarojini Naidu was a distinguished poet and renowned freedom fighter. She joined the Indian national movement in the wake of the Bengal Partition in 1905.

 During the freedom struggle, she became a follower of Gandhiji, and devoted herself to emancipation of women, education, Hindu-Muslim unity, and other patriotic and social causes.

 

 Sarojini Naidu had the honour of presiding over the annual session of Indian National Congress at Kanpur in 1925.

She participated in the Round Table Conference with Mahatma Gandhi. In the year 1942, Sarojini Naidu was arrested during the Quit India Movement and jailed for 21 months with Gandhiji.

Sarojini Naidu was appointed as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, as soon as India became independent.

 Her poetry, which was filled with love for her motherland and yearning for its freedom, has inspired and moved generations of Indians to the present day.
