How many times has Mount Yasur erupted?

Mount Yasur is a volcano that’s been erupting daily for the last 800 years or more. Located on Tanna Island in Vanuatu in the South Pacific, 184 feet above sea level, it is the world’s most active, accessible volcano. It was originally documented by explorer Captain James Cook in 1774, but is believed to have been continuously erupting long before that. The volcano erupts multiple times a day and is most active from last February to April. The land around Mount Yasur is dead and clear of vegetation because of the eruptions. Tourists regularly visit the volcano to watch the natural fireworks display.

The Vanuatu Government monitors the level of volcanic activity in the interests of the public, both tourists and locals alike. This monitoring is carried out by the Vanuatu Geo-Hazards Observatory.

The importance of the volcano to Tanna’s tourism industry has resulted in the local government creating levels to alert people. These levels range from 0-5 and notes that an eruption may occur at any level.
