What is the value of the lobster?

Only 1 in 2, 00,000 lobsters is blue, according to the University of Marine Lobster Institute. This is because of a genetic abnormality that causes them to produce more of a certain protein than others.

David Spiegelhalter from the University of Cambridge pointed out that a rough analysis shows that 200 million lobsters are caught in the North Atlantic every year. He stated that if the odds are correct then it would mean 100 of them would be blue. Spiegelhalter concluded that the catches are not all that surprising, and that these lobsters probably turn up most years. In any case when blue lobsters are caught they are either released back into the sea, or placed in local aquariums.
