Which is the oldest continuing hereditary monarchy in the world?

The Emperor of Japan the only remaining monarch in the world reigning under the title of “emperor”. The Imperial House of Japan is the oldest continuing hereditary monarchy in the world. The current emperor is His Imperial Majesty Akihito who has been on the Chrysanthemum Throne since 1989. The Emperor’s birthday (currently celebrated on December 23) is a national holiday. Under the present Constitution of Japan, the Emperor is “the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people”. Other members of the Imperial Family perform ceremonial and social duties, but have no role in the affairs of government. The duties as an Emperor are passed down the line to their children.  The Imperial House recognizes 126 monarchs beginning with the legendary Emperor Jimmu  and continuing up to the current emperor, Naruhito.
