Why did astronauts land on the moon?

The urge to explore and satisfy scientific curiosity certainly played a role in NASA’s multi-mission program to land two astronauts on the moon’s stark surface in 1969. But the driving force behind the moon missions – known as the Apollo program – was a so-called space race between the United States and the former Soviet Union, rivals in a global struggle of power. The Soviet had beaten the United States in the race to send the first man into space eight years earlier. The U.S. committed vast amounts of money and scientific brainpower to ensure it would win the race to the moon.
