What causes mirages in the desert?

It’s a deadly scenario played out in the desert dunes: A thirsty explorer spies an oasis in the distant sands. He runs toward the refreshing pools, but they recede into the distance, until he eventually collapses from thirst and exhaustion. The desert mirage has claimed another victim! Like rainbows, mirages are optical illusions that an observer can never approach. And also like rainbows, they’re caused by a trick of the light. The air near the desert floor is much hotter than the air above it. This change in temperature bends, or refracts, the sunlight, making it appear like a cool pool reflecting water on the desert floor.
