Why is Manama an important city?

Manama is the capital of the State of Bahrain. Archaeologists say that Manama, an ancient city, had human settlements on its coastline during the Bronze Age. The city was a commercial and pearling centre for hundreds of years. It developed into an important trans-shipment point for business between India and the Persian Gulf by 1782. Manama became a cosmopolitan hub of Iranian, Indian and Gulf Arab communities by the latter half of the twentieth century.

Manama is the largest city of Bahrain. The largest port of the country, Mina Sulman, is in Manama. The city has many oil refineries and light industries in it. The National Museum and a Quran museum are the main attractions in the city.

Manama is a strikingly modern city today. About one-fifth of the population of the entire country lives here. Manama is one of the most favoured destinations for visitors from neighbouring Saudi Arabia.
