Can a tree heal itself?

When we are ill, we go to hospital because we need a doctor to examine us and prescribe appropriate medicines. However, even after receiving very severe cuts and wounds, we have often seen that trees sprout new shoots and leaves. Trees have the natural ability to heal themselves.

A tree can be wounded by natural causes like fire, ice, storms and wind, or by attacks made by men or animals. The wound ‘bleeds’ at first and sap oozes out from the opening. As time passes, a tissue forms at the edges of the wound. This formation causes the sap to stop oozing, and protects the inner tissues. Now, the cells from the growth tissue around the edges begin to multiply and grow inwards until they meet in the centre. This process gradually heals the tree. How ever, if the wound is very large, the tree might live the rest of its life with a permanent scar.
