Are root hairs very important to the root system?

The root system is often a very intricate system. Only a careful look will reveal the fine hair like parts of roots. Root hairs are very delicate and short. They are found just below the root tip’s growth zone. Very often, their size prevents us from noticing them with our naked eyes.

Root hairs have an existence of a few weeks, as they are regularly replaced by new ones. Their importance lies in the fact that they do almost all the actual work of absorbing water and nutrients from the soil. They also provide stability to the root as the growing tip penetrates through the particles of soil.

Therefore, even the tallest and strongest tree depends for its survival on these fragile and puny root hairs.
