What is the role of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change?

We know beyond any doubt the disastrous effects of climate change upon the world. We tend to think about the calamities in terms of their physical impact. However, climate change can have many socio-political and economic effects. A scientific body such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) aims to assess the risk of human-induced climate change, its potential impacts, and possible options for prevention.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an intergovernmental body established under the auspices of the United Nations. The organization is set up at the request of member governments and is dedicated to the task of providing the world with an objective, scientific view of climate change and its political and economic impact.

IPCC was established in 1988 by two United Nations organisations, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The agency was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly later. It provides an internationally accepted authority on climate change, producing reports, which have the agreement of leading climate scientists and the consensus of participating governments.
