What led Darwin to develop his theory of evolution?

In 1831 Charles Darwin (1809-1882) set out on an exploratory voyage in the ship Beagle, heading for South America. The voyage lasted five years, and during this time Darwin kept careful notes of everything he saw, and especially of the strange animal life in the Galapagos Islands. In 1858 Darwin published his theories in a book called The Origin of Species. It caused a great sensation. The book was almost immediately accepted by the scientific world. It is now generally agreed that evolution takes place along the lines that Darwin suggested. Some scientists believe that changes take place in a series of steps rather than a continuous gradual process.
