Viruses are even smaller than bacteria, but strictly speaking they are not alive. To be ‘alive’ an organism must be able to grow and reproduce. Viruses cannot do this themselves, and the only way they can reproduce is to enter a living cell and take control of it. The cell then becomes a living factory that produces more viruses.
