What is plankton?

The surface layers of the sea are filled with tiny life forms. Many of these are the young of fish, crustaceans, worms and other forms of sea life.

All these creatures, together with algae, make up the plankton that is the main food resource of the seas. Plankton is found in large amounts in the cold polar seas where whales are most common.
