Why is the Okapi different?

The okapi, which looks like a zebra is in fact, a relative of the giraffe. However, it is much smaller, and shares similarities with deer too. Okapis in general are herbivorous that feed in leaves and buds. The animal is also the national symbol of the Republic of Congo, and appears on the country’s banknotes. But, nothing has saved it from the threats of being endangered.

Also known as forest giraffes, okapis are found only in the rainforests of Congo. According to experts, its population has reduced at least 50 percent since 1995 because of poaching and habitat loss. Unregulated mining of diamonds, gold, and other mineral resources that take place in their range is another factor that contributes to the danger the animals face.

Indeed there are laws protecting these endangered animals in Congo, but the number of okapis shows no improvement. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is one area where they are conserved, but the presence of armed groups in this area pose a different threat. In June 2012, the headquarters of the reserve was attacked by poachers, and six guards along with 14 okapis were killed.
