Why is Jan Tinbergen prominent among Nobel laureates?

 

          The Dutch economist Jan Tinbergen was a pioneer in the development of econometrics, linking statistics and mathematics to economic theory. He shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Economics with Ragnar Frisch.

          Tinbergen was born on 12th April 1903, in The Netherlands. During the 1930s, he developed the first macro-economic model. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential economists of the 20th century.

          He was educated at the University of Leiden, where he earned a doctoral degree in physics. He took part in discussions with his professors, including Albert Einstein. His interests shifted to economics, which he thought would allow him to contribute more to society.

          Tinbergen was a founding trustee of Economists for Peace and Security. In 1945, he founded the Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). He was its first chairman.

          During his lifetime, Tinbergen received 20 honorary degrees from institutions worldwide. He died in The Netherlands on 9th June, 1994.
