What are the Stone Towers of Arizona?

The strange Monument valley is located in the plains of North West of Arizona and South West of Utah in USA. On a high plain in Arizona stand the wildest assortment of red stone towers and butts.

Among these towers, three structures are such that they resemble with each other and are called three sisters. One of them is hat shaped and its height is about 243 metres. They appear as natural columns.

Some layers of the rock are more resistant than others to the wearing effect of wind and rain. A tough cap is left supported by a more eroded sub-layer. This fact is visible in a tower there. The upper layer of this strangely shaped rock is very hard while the soft lower layers have been eroded by rain and air.

These structures appear very close to each other but actually they are not very close. The total rainfall here in a year is about 20 cm but the snowfall is quite high. Created thus by nature, these structures lend a beautiful sight to the valley. At the time of sunset, the shadows of these towers extend to miles of length. These structures have red colour stone.

According to a calculation these structures were created some 2500 million years ago by the erosion of sand and stones through air and rain. Even today erosion is taking place but it is so slow that one does not notice any change even during the whole lifetime.

Some of the rock pillars give the look of monuments. Indeed beneath one rock a Navaho Indian lies with his horse. The Navaho tribe was the largest and influential among fifteen tribes those were the original inhabitants of Arizona. These natural structures compare well with the grandest and most beautiful mausoleums constructed by human beings. They are as massive as pyramids of Egypt and as wonderful as many man-made monuments which are hunting us for ages.
