Why is it said that the invention of the transformer was a turning point?

A transformer is an electrical device that works on electromagnetic induction to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits. It is used in a wide range of power appliances to increase, or decrease voltage.

We see transformers in almost every city. They are used to convert high-voltage electricity from incoming power lines, to lower-voltages.

The first known transformer was developed in the 1880s. Since then the device has played a key role in transmission of power. There are mainly three names involved with the invention of transformers – Otto Blathy, Miksa Deri and Karoly Zipernowsky. They are known to have designed the first transformer in the early 1880s. The first reliable commercial transformer was built in 1885 by William Stanley. Since then the device has played a key role in the transmission of power.
