The Saluki is the world’s oldest dog breed. Its ancestors date to 7000 to 6000 BCE, and are depicted on wall carvings of the Sumerian empire (now Iraq). It was sacred to the Egyptians, who called it the “royal dog of Egypt”. It has been prized since ancient times for its ability in the hunt, running down gazelle and other swift prey over desert sands, providing sport for kings and food for nomads.
Salukis possess a greyhound-like build, combining slender legs, a narrow body, deep chest, long tail and a small waist. They have a slightly slopped face and they are built for both speed and endurance.
The Saluki is a devoted breed of dog, but they tend to be aloof, or even shy, with strangers. They are typically very quiet and gentle, and they are good with other dogs.
These dogs must get the chance to run and burn off some energy every day. They are moderately obedient, but they can misbehave if they are not exercised. Despite their gentle, quiet domineer, the Saluki is a serious hunter.
Modern Salukis still retain many of these characteristics and have been known to chase down squirrels, goats, otters, foxes, raccoons, snakes, and deer. Their speed has been clocked at 30 to 35 miles per hour.
