What products are made from plants?

Flowers are not the only beautiful things we get from plants. Plants are used for musical instruments, perfumes, dyes, and even jewellery.

The violins and clarinets in big orchestras as well as the guitars of folk and rock musicians are made of wood that comes from trees. Many Asian musical instruments are made of bamboo, including a Japanese horn called a shaku hachi, a Chinese flute called a xiao, and a Balinese xylophone called a fungklih.

Many lovely perfumes are made of oil from flowers. People also can use the juice of flowers, berries, and bark to add colour to cloth. Today, most colours are made from coal tar. Coal-tar dyes also come from plants, because coal comes from trees that died long ago.

Necklaces and other jewellery are also often made of a yellowish rock called amber. Amber started out as a sticky gum that oozed from ancient evergreen trees. Over millions of years, this gum turned hard as rock.
