How do plants give energy?

All animals need green plants to survive, even if they don’t eat plants.

Plants use sunlight, water, and air to grow and store up energy. When animals eat plants, they get energy from them. When a cow eats grass, for example, it takes in energy stored in the grass. It uses some of this energy to grow – to make bones and meat. It also uses some of this energy to make milk. Chickens eat plant food, too. They use the energy to grow and to produce eggs.

When you drink milk from a cow or eat eggs from a chicken, you are getting some of this plant energy into your body. Some people who do not eat meat get all their energy straight from plants.
