Why do we sweat when we are nervous?

There are two types of sweat glands in the human body. The eccrine glands are activated when the temperature is high, and the apocrine glands are activated when we are anxious or stressed.

So what happens when you are nervous? Your body triggers the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system, which in turn activates the stress hormone adrenaline. The aprocrine glands are sensitive to changes in adrenaline. So the glands start producing sweat.

Did you know the apocrine sweat leads to a bad body odour? It is because this sweat is a mixture of fatty acids, steroids and proteins, whereas sweat from exercise and temperature increases is mostly water and salt. The chemical mixture of sweat from the apocrine glands attracts bacteria living in our body. As the bacteria break down these chemicals, they release a bad odour.
