How many different styles of houses are there?

Some of the very first houses were caves. They had walls and ceilings that kept out wind, rain, and prowling animals. They had floors where people could sit or sleep.

In time, people learned to build different kinds of homes. They needed homes that were right for the place where they lived. They used materials they found nearby.

In dry places, houses were made of mud or clay. Where there was plenty of wood, people built houses of logs or boards. On grassy plains, they built homes of dry grass.

People who lived near rivers made rafts or houseboats, or built their houses on stilts.

Today, people still build homes that are right for the place where they live. People who live in very hot places need houses that keep them cool. People in the frozen north need houses that keep the cold out.

Our homes – even blocks of flats – have much in common with those first caves. They protect us against the weather and give us a safe place to sit and sleep.
