What are Superfoods?

Most experts agree that no single food is good for bad for our health. Some foods that are especially rich in nutrients are called “superfoods” – but even these should form part of a varied and balanced diet.

Superfoods contain a variety of nutrients, such as antioxidants, which are thought to ward off cancer. They also have healthy fats, thought to prevent heart disease; fiber, thought to prevent diabetes and digestive problems; and phytochemicals — the chemicals in plants responsible for deep colors and smells, which can have numerous health benefits.

Quinoa

Pronounced “keen-wa”, this South American grain is very high in protein and contains all the amino acids the body needs. It contains more protein than any other grain while also packing in iron and potassium. One half cup of quinoa has 14 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber. This superfood is classified as a whole grain and is naturally gluten-free. Quinoa is a tiny grain that cooks up like rice and has a mild, nutty flavor and a light, fluffy texture similar to couscous. You can find it next to other grains in health-food stores and your supermarket.

Blueberries

Some studies suggest that eating this fruit improves blood circulation and boosts mental function. Blueberries often top many lists of superfoods because they are rich in vitamins, soluble fiber and phytochemicals.  A study published in 2013 in the journal Circulation found that a high intake of phytochemicals known as flavonoids — which are found in blueberries as well as other kinds of berries — may reduce the risk of certain heart conditions in young women.

Beetroot

Research has shown that this vegetable can help lower blood pressure and improve exercise performance. Another recent Australian study suggested adding the nitrate-rich beetroot juice to our workouts can enhance athletic performance in both short duration and more endurance-based events. The study revealed the beetroot supplement improved the energy needed to maintain their speed by up to five per cent. The more beetroot juice consumed, the better the athletes’ physical performance.
